First Grade Turkey Program

Today we had a turkey program in Chad's classroom. We were invited for school lunch (always such a treat to pay for school lunch) and a turkey program. The food was actually edible. Sean and Halle behaved themselves!!!!! (sometimes miracles do happen). And Chad's class and teacher did a great job. They read poems, sang songs, and said jokes all about turkeys and pilgrims and Indians.

Best of all, Chad's grandparents, Herm and Jeraldine, were also able to attend. They love being involved with their grandkids. The closer it gets for them to leave on their missions, the closer I come to having a total panic attack. I don't know what I am going to do with out them.

Ms. Kinzer and her first grade class sing a song.

Chad, actually participating.

44!

November 12, 1963 was the day my husband was born. So, yes, that makes him 44 today. We had a most exciting day by spending it mostly without kids! Chris' parents graciously had our three wild ones all day while Chris and I went out for lunch and shopping. I think spending time together is the best birthday gift!!!

Later we included the kids (kind of works out better that way on FHE night) with a lesson on gratitude, opening presents, and then of course having birthday cake (made and decorated by the kids).

Chad, wearing daddy's new basketball shorts. Sean shows off the ties he got daddy. Halle gives the gift of chocolate (but never eats it).

Chris blows out his candles and makes a wish.

Hello. Hello. Can You Hear Me?

A few weeks ago we were having problems with our phones. They wouldn't sustain a dial tone - so the connection would brake in the middle of a conversation. Then it worsened and the connection would only last a couple of rings before becoming dead. And finally, they wouldn't work at all.

Since we have been on Comcast we have lost our internet and phone service several times. So I just figured Comcast was having some problems. I called up my in-laws to confirm (they have comcast too and are on the same grid - so if ours doesn't work neither does theirs) but theirs was working. The other unusual thing was that the internet was still working - they usually both go out.

Chris and I figured it must be the actual phones that were then causing the problem. We charged them all up and reset them. But still anything we tried didn't help. We figured the kids must have done something to them.

This all occurred over the weekend. By Wednesday, not having a phone was getting pretty annoying. Again, I went through all the procedures to try and fix the phones but nothing worked. Finally when I looked at our modem, I noticed that it was not blinking right. So, I finally succumbed to calling Comcast for some help (using my cell phone of course - thank goodness for cell phones). After being put on hold for 15 minutes (it is a good thing I don't use that many minutes on my plan) I finally got someone to talk to me. I explained that my phone wasn't working and after a few minutes of getting vital information from me they reported back that we had a failure in our phone line. Well, duh!!!! That is why I am calling.

After giving some more information and trying several different things from their end (rebooting our line and what ever else they do) they said they would have to send someone out. So, I figured that it would be a couple of days before they could get someone out - but as it happens someone was going to be in our area between 3-7 pm that day. (I love how specific they are able to narrow down the times for you! Good thing I had nothing better to do than stay at home and clean and watch kids.)

Finally a worker comes. He checks out our modem - and again tells me that the blinking light means we have a phone failure. (Yes, I think we have already established this!). After plenty of fiddling and using high-tech gadgets he lets me know we have a short in the line. He traces the phone wires in and out of the house to check them out. Nothing. Next he says, "I notice you have kids." (Ah, what tipped you off? The toys flung all over the house or the noisy screams vibrating throughout the house?) "Have any of them played with the phone jacks? Sometimes kids like to put things in the jacks and that will short the phone line."

"Really?" I say, but I am thinking, "Agggh! That Sean! He is going to pay for this." I know it is probably him, because there is a phone jack in his room, right by the plug that we use for the night light. He has fiddled with the night lights so much that he has gone through at least 10 of them just this month. It has to be Sean.

The worker asked me to examine all the indoor phone jacks while he went outside to examine the phone box leading into the house.

I go immediately to Sean's room. But there is nothing stuck in there and I don't see any obvious damage. I proceed to check all the phone jacks in the house. But no, I don't see anything.

I go outside to report my non-findings to the worker. I tell him that all the phone jacks are clear, but I am secretly still convinced that it is all Sean's fault. He responds by saying, "Are you squeamish?" Well, yes I am. But after being a science teacher I have to say, "No, not at all." He then shows me a wadded up napkin in his hands and says, "I think I found the problem." As he unwraps the napkins I see a slug. I hate slugs!!!!! It is a huge yucky slug with one end that has exploded and been burned.

Apparently this slug had slimed it's way into the outside phone box. It had dissolved the plastic coating around the wires (which was causing the initial problem of the line cutting out sometimes). Then after enough wire had been exposed the slug and crawled across two different wires - which provided a conduit between the two wires and shorted them out(thus no phone connection)and also ended the life of the pesky slug.

He then handed me the slug (to show to my husband later) and handed me the bill (I don't know which one was worse to receive).

I was very relived that it wasn't Sean. That was probably a first for Sean, that he wasn't to blame. So, if something goes wrong around our house, I am no longer 100% sure that it is Sean, I am only 99.9% sure!

Aren't Girls Supposed to do That?

Halle has fine hair that is hard to grow. I have been dreading the day my kids decide to play "hairdresser." Well, today the day came. But the good news is that Halle was not involved. The bad news is it was my boys that decided to play hairdresser (aren't girls, not boys, supposed to do that?). Chad had decided to give Sean a hair cut. I didn't even notice until dinner time to night (must be that low blood sugar). As I looked at Sean I noticed a couple of bald patches. (I tried to take a picture of it - but I am a bad photographer and have a bad camera - so it didn't turn out).

Not knowing if Sean had done it himself (he is really into using scissors lately) or someone else was involved I asked him what happened. He immediately told me that Chad did it. Of course, you can't always believe a 3 year old, so I talked to Chad. He owned right up with his generic excuse of, "I got confused, mom." This excuse always cracks me up. What exactly did he get confused about? Did he not understand that he was cutting hair, and not paper? Did he not think he had a real pair of scissors in his hands? Did he think mom wouldn't notice? I would have loved to know exactly the thoughts that were going on in his head at that moment!!!!!!

Anyway, the bald patches persuaded me to give Sean an impromptu hair cut to help correct the "dinkle-dorf" look. ("Dinkle-dorf" is a term coined by my husband for when you are looking like a real dork!) So now we have one handsome looking little boy and one big boy in his room thinking about what confused him.

Blogging? Oh yeah, I need to do that as soon as . . .

Yikes, have I really been so neglectful of my blog site!? I expected October to be long and calm, but instead it was fast and furious with activity. Today feels like the first day that I have really had to myself in a long time. It was a nice day today :-)

What I did in October (on top of all the usual stuff):

1. Started volunteering morning and afternoon at Chad and Halle's school.

2. Helped with vision screening.

3. Attended an absolutely worthless, "mandatory" volunteer's meeting.

4. Got three kids ready for school pictures and at the school by 8:30 am.

5. Tried to celebrate our 10th anniversary (it was pretty pitiful this year - with a lot of schedule conflicts and other people cancelling our plans - thank goodness we went on that cruise this summer and counted that as our big 10th celebration).

6. Gave a birthday dinner and family home evening for Alisa (of the King family).

7. Helped my kids decorate cakes for a cake decorating contest at school.

8. Went to the school Fall Carnival.

9. Hurried and learned all the primary songs for the Primary program (I was just called as the primary pianist - Wahoo!!!!!!!!)

10. Organized all my Relief Society stuff and passed it onto the next victim, oh I mean, lucky sister.

12. Prepared 3 costumes for Halloween.

13. Volunteered to go on a field trip with 25 first graders to Green Bluff for the day.

14. Volunteered to help out with a 2 day harvest party in the kindergarten.

15. Had my mom and dad come for a visit.

16. Hosted my first book group.

17. Attended soccer practice and soccer games.

18. Gave my kids a piano recital.

19. Continued to tear up my house to reorganize and declutter (taking for ever!)

20. Retrieved the Halloween tub and finally decorated for Halloween (didn't happen until Halloween day).

21. Went to the pumpkin patch.

22. Carved pumpkins.

23. Celebrated Halloween.

24. Created "Photoshows" because none of my family members read my blog (which ironically was the one of the main reasons I started blogging). So, check them out.

25. And last, but not least, finally blogged!!!!
